Singlers Marsh

We're delighted to announce that the national rollout of the Catchment Based Approach will be launched from Singler's Marsh, in the Mimram catchment.

The date of the rollout will be confirmed shortly when Herts & Middlesex Wildlife Trust & the Environment Agency will be hosting a visit by Richard Benyon, Natural Environment & Fisheries Minister.

Water Buffalo

It was a momentous day as the buffalo arrived at Thorley to play their part in the restoration of the site.

Himalayan balsam flower

The invasive species Himalayan Balsam causes huge problems for our rivers.  Herts & Middlesex Wildlife Trust are planning several working parties this summer to pull Himlayan Balsam from key locations within the catchments.

Dragonfly sculpture

The wooden sculptures depict some of the wildlife that can be seen around the reserve and on the adjacent Stort Navigation.

The barn owl, dragonfly, water vole, woodpecker and otter seat were all commissioned by Herts & Middlesex Wildlife Trust, who own Thorley Wash, and were carved by local artist Dan Cordell

Tree work at Singlers Marsh

Another project on the Catchment Plan is now green!

Contractors started work this morning on Mimram project 19, 'Windows of Vision' at Singlers Marsh, Welwyn.

AG Treecare Ltd have started clearing overshading scrub from alongside the B656 Codicote Road, to allow more light to reach the river.  They will also pollard some of the very large trees on the marsh side of the river.

You are invited to an evening of short talks focussed on current scientific research into chalk stream restoration and monitoring. Speakers include researchers from London’s Natural History Museum, the University of Hertfordshire & University College London.

Herts & Middlesex Wildlife Trust's Charlie Bell was interviewed on BBC Three Counties Radio on 19th Feb. She was talking about our rare local chalk streams, including the Beane and Mimram, and the Catchment Management Plan.
