35. Bypassing weirs at Digswell

Theme: Water Quality, Habitats and Wildlife

Objective:

  • That whatever the flow level, the river and its associated habitats, including banks and floodplains, are managed to support chalk stream species

Project description

This project will put in a naturalised bypass channel around three weirs which are currently acting as a barrier to fish passage.

On the River Mimram at Digswell, there are three weirs across the river.  These weirs act as a barrier for fish movement, one of the reasons the Mimram is failing to meet Good Ecological Status under the Water Framework Directive.  Affinity Water are developing this project as part of their programme of works to improve the morphological form of the river.
