31. Improving the river channel upstream of Codicote Mill

Theme: Water Quality, Habitats and Wildlife

Objectives:

  • That whatever the flow level, the river and its associated habitats, including banks and floodplains, are managed to support chalk stream species
  • That water quality, temperature and river bed quality are such that they support chalk stream ecology

Project description

To improve the ecological health of the river channel between Codicote Mill and Duck Trap Wood.

This section of the river would benefit from thinning some of the overhanging trees and vegetation, to allow more light to reach the channel and aid the establishment of in-channel aquatic vegetation.

The addition of Large Woody Debris (LWD) within the channel would add variety to the flow, scour areas of the bed and allow the river to re-establish a more natural form.  This would have benefits for a range of species.
