15. Influencing local planning policy

Themes: Flow; People

Objectives:

  • That there is water flowing along the whole length of the river at all times (excluding historic winterflowing sections)
  • To increase the public's appreciation of the unique chalk stream environment and their participation in its conservation

Project description

This project aims to advocate the issue of water efficiency to be recognised by forward planners, and water efficiency policies to be incorporated into their strategic plans.

The South-east is a water-stressed area; it is also an area where further development and new homes are planned. Forward planning involving water efficiency measures needs to be done at a policy level.

Interested parties hope to meet with Stevenage Borough Council planning policy team to talk about the problems facing the area in terms of water supply. Lobbying will also be done, to ask that future planning policies acknowledge the scarcity for water and include water efficiency measures.

All local authorities will now be updating local plans to cover the next ten year period. Additionally, all are now required to include sustainability in their plans.
