Wheathampstead Parish Council have planning major repair and restoration works on bank of the River Lea in The Meads. With help and advice from the Herts and Middlesex Wildlife Trust, the Environment Agency, and a grant from an environmental charity.

Work has now begun. Between now and 15 March, willow spiling will be installed along several stretches of the river bank. This work will be done by volunteers and we need your help!

Willow spiling involves three tasks:

  • pollarding the willows in the plantation on The Meads
  • driving stakes into the river bed along the bank
  • interweaving the results of the pollarding through the stakes.

There is a task suitable for anyone, whatever your level of strength, stamina etc.

There is a lot of work to be done so there will be a working session

  • every Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday morning
  • from Saturday 27 January to Tuesday 13 March, except Tuesday 20 February.

Each session will start at 10.00 am and finish not later than 12.30 pm. All tools will be provided. At least three people at each session will need to wear wellies.

You will be welcome (and needed!) at as many or as few of these sessions as you can manage and for as long or short at each session as you like. It would be helpful to know in advance if you would like to come but please just turn up whenever the mood takes you.
