13. Eel pass at Lemsford Mill

Theme: Ecology and management

Objective:

  • Ensure connectivity for fish passage

Project description

This project will design and install an eel pass at Lemsford Mill, to facilitate the movement of this endangered and iconic species.

Eels have declined dramatically over the last few decades and are now listed as Critically Endangered.  Their life cycle requires them to move up and down catchments and out to the open sea.  These movements can be blocked by weirs, locks and other barriers.  This project will design and fit an eel pass to Lemsford Mill, which will allow elvers to bypass this structure and move upstream.
