Hertfordshire County Council and the Environment Agency have been investigating options to improve the River Stort through Grange Paddocks open space, via a weir removal scheme which will open up access for fish and other wildlife along 28km of river corridor!

Throughout 2021, plans to fully remove the weir will be drawn up in detail along with designs for river restorartion upstream of the structure, where its habitats have degraded as a result of it being in place. The aim is to have the project contstruction ready by the end of the year.

This will be a fantastic improvement for wildlife in the local area, including water voles - the UKs rarest mammal - and fish like brown trout and barbel, which need long, connected stretches of river to feed and shelter.
